Rep. Gina McCabe to discuss 'Travis Alert Act' at Children's Village on Thursday, Sept. 24
Rep. Gina McCabe, the prime-sponsor of the "Travis Alert Act," is the guest speaker at Children's Village Thursday, Sept. 24, where she will discuss the proposed legislation.
The "Travis Alert Act," House Bill 2287, would assist first responders in emergencies in identifying those with autism or other disabilities.
"The legislative session is months away, but I want to make sure we have a strong piece of legislation ready to go. It will be a short, 60-day session and the more opportunity for input we provide for citizens to contribute to the discussion improves our chances of making this law," said McCabe, R-Goldendale. "The enthusiasm and passion around this issue has been overwhelming and I hope to continue that momentum into the session in January."
The idea for the "Travis Alert Act" came from Travis' mom, Threasa, who brought the idea to McCabe during the Legislature's second special session this year.
The bill would create a system for a colored, reflective puzzle-piece decal that could be placed in a vehicle or on the main entrance of a residence to indicate a person with disabilities could be present. It would also create an enhanced 911 program for parents to optionally submit information pertaining to their child(s) disability so first responders would know how to best address the emergency situation.
Children's Village is a collaborative center serving children with special health care and developmental needs, ages birth through young adulthood.
The event is open to the public and begins at 4 p.m. The Children's Village is located at 3801 Kern Rd. in Yakima.
