Klippert receives leadership award from national organization for his commitment against drunk driving

The Century Council, a national not-for-profit organization funded by distillers dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking, recently recognized Rep. Brad Klippert, R-Kennewick, with its 2013 Leadership Award.

The Council says Klippert has shown an outstanding commitment to fighting drunk driving in Washington, including championing legislation that was signed into law that represents a comprehensive set of solutions to address hardcore drunk driving in Washington, piloting a 24/7 sobriety program in five municipalities and requiring a task force to report recommendations for DUI intervention strategies.

Representative Brad Klippert has been an exemplary leader for the people of District Eight,” said Ralph Blackman, President and CEO of The Century Council. “We can’t thank the representative enough for his dedication to prevent drunk driving by sending a clear message that it is illegal and will not be tolerated. We look forward to expanding our relationship and continuing to save lives in the future with Representative Klippert.”

Klippert was excited to receive the award, but more work needs to be done.

“I am very honored to be recognized by the Century Council on this issue. I have worked very hard to strengthen the drunk driving laws in our state,” said Klippert. “However, much more work still needs to be done. I will be pushing bills in the upcoming session to build on the recent laws we passed.”

Klippert has already introduced legislation for the upcoming session that would:

  • require all DUI offenders to be arrested, booked and put on a six-hour hold;
  • make it a felony DUI on the fourth DUI conviction, instead of on the fifth DUI conviction, under current law; and
  • eliminate the “10-year look back” for felony DUIs, so the fourth DUI in a lifetime would be a felony DUI, instead of the fourth DUI within 10 years.

The Century Council is a leader in the fight to eliminate drunk driving and underage drinking. It also promotes responsible decision-making regarding beverage alcohol and develops and implements innovative programs and public awareness campaigns.
